About Norderblick

Norderblick started in the spring of 2024 as a simple question: why is it so hard to find honest, practical travel writing about the North? Plenty of guides cover Berlin and Bavaria, but the stretch from Hamburg to the Danish border — some of Germany's most beautiful and underrated landscape — barely gets a mention in English.

We set out to fix that. Norderblick is a small, independent editorial project run by a handful of writers and editors who live in and around Hamburg. We write about daytrips, weekends, cycling routes, coastal walks, and the kind of slow, outdoor travel that Northern Germany does better than almost anywhere in Europe.

What We Cover

Our focus is narrow on purpose. We write about places you can reach from Hamburg in under three hours — by train, by bike, or by car. That includes:

• The North Sea and Baltic coasts, from the Wadden Sea to the Bay of Lübeck
• The Frisian Islands, Sylt, and the Halligen
• The heathlands, moors, and nature reserves of Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein
• Historic cities like Lübeck, Lüneburg, Schwerin, and Stade
• Hamburg itself — its parks, waterways, and overlooked neighbourhoods

How We Work

Every article on Norderblick is based on a real trip taken by one of our writers. We don't rewrite press releases. We don't accept sponsored placements. If a restaurant, hostel, or ferry company appears in a piece, it's because someone on the team actually went there and thought it was worth mentioning.

We keep things simple. No pop-ups, no newsletter nags, no affiliate links cluttering every paragraph. Just clear, well-researched writing about places we genuinely enjoy visiting.

The Team

Janna Petersen — Editor and co-founder. Born in Kiel, based in Hamburg-Eimsbüttel. Janna spent eight years writing for regional newspapers before starting Norderblick. She handles most of the coastal and island pieces.

Moritz Brandt — Co-founder and cycling editor. A landscape architect by training, Moritz plans most of our cycling routes. He has an unhealthy obsession with flat roads and headwinds.

Elif Acar — Contributing writer. Elif covers city daytrips and historical walks. She moved to Hamburg from Istanbul in 2019 and brings a fresh perspective on places longtime residents take for granted.
